Sonu Shamdasani speaks on C.G. Jung’s ‘Book of the Dead’: On Death in The Black Books
On Sunday June 6th, the 60th anniversary of Jung’s death in 1961, Professor Shamdasani will speak of what The Black Books reveal about Jung’s engagement with death’s role in mortal and psychic life. The Black Books of C.G. Jung are not personal diaries of external events, but his notes on the unique self-experimentation that Jung called his ‘confrontation with the unconscious’. In 1934, Jung wrote, “what happens in the secret hour of the midday of life is the reversal of the parabola, the birth of death.” What befell Jung at his own secret hour is charted in his Black Books. This talk follows Jung’s encounter with the dead and death in his nekyia, and how this shaped his understanding of the process and meaning of individuation.
Sonu Shamdasani, a historian of psychology and psychiatry, is editor and co-translator of C. G. Jung’s The Red Book and The Black Books 1913-1932: Notebooks of Transformation. He is Professor in Jung History at University College London, and a Vice-Dean of the Arts and Humanities Faculty.
Professor Shamdasani’s many publications include Jung and the Making of Modern Psychology: The Dream of a Science (Cambridge University Press, 2003), C.G. Jung: A Biography in Books (W. W. Norton, 2012), and with James Hillman, The Lament of the Dead: Psychology After Jung’s Red Book (W. W. Norton, 2013); Théodore Flournoy, From India to the Planet Mars: A Case of Multiple Personality with Imaginary Languages (Princeton University Press, 1994), and (with Michael Munchow), Speculations after Freud: Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and Culture (Routledge, 1994). His research reconstructs the formation of modern psychological disciplines and therapeutics from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, and the formation of the work of Jung, based on primary archival materials.
